Rajasthan & Varanasi:
dance, yoga and textile

with Leli Neeraja and Elizabeth Medina
india

Varanasi: yoga and meditation on the Ganges

Our tour begins in Varanasi, the most sacred of the seven holy cities of Hinduism. We will explore its temples, crowded alleys, cremation grounds, and hidden spots unknown to most tourists. Besides exploring the city, every day—whether in the morning, afternoon, or evening—we will dedicate some time to yoga, pranayama, and meditation with Leli Neeraja and Elizabeth Medina. Both are professionals who have been studying and teaching Indian dances, both classical and folk, as well as yoga and the philosophy that unites these two disciplines, for many years.

Jaipur: in the world of textile

For travelers passionate about textiles, Rajasthan is a true treasure trove. At first glance, you are captivated by the magnificence of its forts, rugged and imposing like the surrounding landscape. But by immersing yourself in the alleys of its markets and entering the artisans’ workshops, you discover the true vocation of this region: art in all its forms, from painting to jewelry, craftsmanship to textiles.

Our second day in Jaipur will be dedicated to textiles. We will visit a workshop where fabrics are manually printed using the ancient block print technique, which we will try firsthand during a workshop.

puja

Indian dances in Pushkar

Our tour will end in Pushkar, the sacred city around Brahma’s lake, where Leli and Elizabeth will become our dance teachers for a few days! We will learn and practice with them, as well as with local teachers, trying out different styles of traditional Indian dances.

humsa

Delhi: the ancient walled city

For those interested, there will be an opportunity to extend the trip by a day to visit Shahjahanabad, the old part of Delhi. Here, we will guide you through its winding alleys and the secrets they hold: tombs of forgotten Sufi saints and emperors, vanished trades, and noble palaces overwhelmed by tree roots and wires.

Day by day program

From 1st to 12th February 2025

Day 1Arrival in Varanasi

Saturday, February 1st

  • Arrival in Varanasi, where we will pick you up at the airport before heading to the hotel for some rest. Ideally, you should arrive in the morning or, at the latest, around lunchtime.
  • We will have lunch together and hold an introductory briefing, where you will meet your fellow travelers and we will explain everything you need to know to make the most of these two weeks!
  • In the afternoon, we will begin our exploration of Varanasi, the sacred city of the Hindus on the banks of the Ganges. On foot, we will walk through the ghats (the stone steps leading down to the river) and the alleys of the southern part of the old city. Among the various sites we will show you is the Lolark Kund, perhaps the oldest (still existing) place of worship in the city, the Harishchandra cremation ground, the Kedareshwar temple, and the Juna Akhara ashram, one of the oldest and most important ascetic orders.
  • Dinner by the river side.
  • With Leli and Elizabeth: before going to sleep, there will be a Yoga Nidra and Pranayama session, perfect for those who have just arrived. This practice is ideal for relaxing the body and mind after a long journey, helping to reduce stress and overcome jet lag. Yoga Nidra, known as “yogic sleep,” will guide you into a state of deep relaxation, rejuvenating the body and promoting complete rest. Afterward, Pranayama, through breathing exercises, will increase your vital energy and help you ground yourself in the surrounding environment. This combination of techniques will mentally and physically prepare you for the experiences awaiting us in the coming days.

If you plan to arrive in Varanasi a few days earlier, we will be happy to help you book hotels, guides, and anything else you might need, as well as suggest places to visit or activities to do in the meantime.

Day 2Varanasi

Sunday, February 2nd

  • With Leli and Elizabeth: we start the day with a Vinyasa Krama Yoga practice on the banks of the Ganges. This dynamic practice, combining movement and breath, will help us wake up the body and synchronize with the morning energy. As we flow through the poses, the soothing sound of the Ganges will accompany us, making the experience even more magical and immersive. After the Vinyasa session, we will devote ourselves to Pranayama, the practice of breath control. These breathing exercises will help us center ourselves, calm the mind, and prepare for the day.
  • We will spend the morning and part of the afternoon exploring the ghats of Varanasi, starting with the central ones—including the Manikarnika cremation ghat, where bodies are burned on large wood pyres by the Ganges—and then moving on to the northern ghats, less known and less explored by travelers but equally fascinating and full of secrets to discover. Here we will see, among other things, the temples of Lakshminarayan, Tripura Sundari, and Bindu Madhav, Alamgir Mosque, and some of the solar deities (Aditya) that form, in Varanasi’s sacred geography, a complex solar diagram, the mysterious origin and functioning of which we will explain to you.
  • Lunch will be in this area, where street food is mainly found. We will also try the lassi from the famous Blue Lassi Shop (lassi is a type of sweet yogurt garnished with fresh and dried fruits) and the typical sweets of Varanasi.
  • With Leli and Elizabeth: in the evening, we will gather for a meditation session focused on the importance of letting go. As the sun sets, we will immerse ourselves in a meditative practice that will help us relax and connect with the energy of the place. This meditation is a unique opportunity to reflect on the day, release tension, and find inner peace.

Day 3Varanasi

Monday, February 3rd

  • In the morning, we will visit the small flower market where garlands are purchased to offer to the Gods.
  • On foot, we will continue towards the far north of the old city, where we will visit some of the most beautiful and less frequented alleys and temples of Varanasi, including Adi Keshav Ghat, located in the oldest part of the city; Kal Bhairav, the most terrifying form of Shiva; the Panchkroshi Mandir, a temple that summarizes and contains all 108 sacred places arranged along the boundaries of the sacred city.
  • Return to the hotel after lunch.
  • With Leli and Elizabeth: in this lesson, we will explore the importance of breath in both yoga and dance. We will start with an in-depth discussion on how breath control can enhance our practice, helping to calm the mind, increase concentration, and strengthen the connection between mind and body. We will then put what we have learned into practice with yoga and dance exercises focused on breath. We will learn how to integrate breath with movement, creating a harmonious synergy that enhances the benefits of both disciplines. This session will allow us to directly experience the power of breath and deepen our awareness and presence in the moment.
  • In the late afternoon, if you wish, we will accompany you on a shopping tour, visiting traditional perfume shops (ittar), Indology bookshops, and hand-carved woodcraft shops.

Day 4From Varanasi to Jaipur

Tuesday, February 4th

  • Today, we bid farewell to Varanasi with a textile tour through the alleys of the Muslim quarter. We will start by visiting some embroidery shops and a manual dyeing workshop where sarees are dyed. Then, we will move on foot to a nearby area, where we will see weavers at work with handlooms, beautiful manual looms from which true works of art emerge! We will continue the tour by visiting one of the few—if not the only—places where fabrics are printed using the screen print technique: a color transfer technique that uses mesh screens, where the color passes only through the holes that make up the design.

  • With Leli and Elizabeth: during this activity, we will explore the fascinating history of Odissi, one of the oldest classical Indian dances, and discover how it has evolved to influence modern dances. Through practical demonstrations and an introduction to dance, we will experience the journey from ancient to contemporary together.

  • In the afternoon, we will take a night train to Jaipur. The journey will last about 17 hours, from late afternoon to late morning the next day. We will travel in 3AC class, with berths for lying down, windows with glass, and air conditioning.

Day 5Jaipur

Wednesday, February 5th

  • Arrival in Jaipur in the late morning. Transfer to the hotel and lunch.
  • In the afternoon, after a moment of rest, we will visit the Amber Fort, the most spectacular and grandiose of the city, perched on the hills north of the center.
  • Before dinner, you will have free time to explore Jaipur’s Pink City, a vast open-air market where each block is reserved for specific products such as jewelry, gems, textiles, etc. This area is the artistic and commercial heart of the city, full of havelis (traditional mansions of northern India), temples, and artisan shops.
  • With Leli and Elizabeth: after dinner, we will explore the art of storytelling through mudras (hand gestures) and facial expressions. We will discover how these fundamental elements of Indian dance are used to narrate stories and convey emotions. Through practical exercises, we will learn to express feelings and tell stories in an engaging and authentic way.

Day 6Jaipur

Thursday, February 6th

  • With Leli and Elizabeth: we start the day with a dance technique lesson, focusing on details and movements that will enhance our expressiveness and precision.
  • This morning, we will participate in a block print workshop at a factory just outside Jaipur. Block printing is an ancient textile printing and dyeing technique typical of Rajasthan. The art of block printing particularly lies in the hands of the Chhipa caste artisans, who skillfully carve the wooden blocks used for printing the fabric. Each of us will have a white cotton shopping bag created, which we will enjoy printing using the blocks and colors provided.
  • After the workshop, we’ll visit a fabric store, where we can stay as long as we like! Depending on requests and the supplier’s availability, there will be an opportunity to choose one of the dresses displayed in the store’s showroom and have it customized with the fabrics we select on-site.

Day 7from Jaipur to Pushkar

Friday, February 7th

  • Daytime train to Ajmer; the journey will take about 2 hours, and we’ll arrive around lunchtime. From Ajmer, we’ll take a rickshaw or local bus to Pushkar, about ten kilometers from the Ajmer station.
  • Pushkar is a sacred Hindu town built around a lake that, according to mythology, was created by the tears of Shiva after the death of his wife Sati. Here, Hindus come to scatter the ashes of their deceased loved ones, along with fragments of bones. In the old town’s narrow streets, cars are not allowed, while cows, macaques, langurs, and stray dogs roam freely and undisturbed.
  • With Leli and Elizabeth: today, we’ll discover the fascinating world of Indian Fusion, a combination of traditional Indian dance styles and contemporary movements. In this session, we’ll explore the basics of this innovative style.
  • In the evening, if you would like a break from Indian food, we’ll have dinner at a pizzeria!

Day 8Pushkar

Saturday, February 8th

  • With Leli and Elizabeth: morning Indian Fusion dance lesson; you will learn combinations that blend the tradition of classical Indian dances with modern influences.
  • Around sunset, we’ll head to the camp of the Kalbelia tribe, snake charmers originally from the Thar Desert, where we’ll spend the evening with Moira, a woman from the tribe who will teach us the steps of their traditional dance. After dinner – which will be served in the camp and eaten sitting on the ground – Moira will perform a Kalbelia dance show, whose movements are inspired by those of a snake. The dance will be accompanied by their typical instruments, including the poongi, the snake charmer’s flute.

Day 9Pushkar

Sunday, February 9th

  • With Leli and Elizabeth: the final lesson of the tour will be dedicated to a review of yoga and dance, a moment to consolidate everything we have learned and experienced together. After yoga, we will go over the dance techniques learned during the tour. This session will also be an opportunity to share experiences and feelings, strengthen the bonds created, and celebrate the progress made.
  • In the afternoon, as an extra and optional activity, you can choose between: a Bollywood dance lesson with a local teacher; an Indian cooking class; or a percussion (nagara) lesson by the sacred lake.
  • At sunset, on the banks of the holy Pushkar lake, we will learn how to use the Nagara, one of the most ancient Indian drums, with a master of the Solanki family.

Day 10From Pushkar to Delhi

Monday, February 10th

  • Morning: free time in Pushkar.
  • Afternoon: train to Delhi. The journey will take about 6 and a half hours. We’ll arrive after dinner.

Day 11Departure (or extra day in Delhi)

Tuesday, February 11th

  • After our last breakfast together, we’ll take care of your transfer to the airport.
  • Alternatively, if you opt for the one-day extension in Delhi, today we will take you on an exploration of Shahjahanabad, the old city of Delhi, through its alleys, sacred sites, and crowded bazaars. In particular, we’ll show (and tell) you about the oldest Jain temple in the city, the bird hospital, the Sikh gurudwara (temple), the semi-unknown tomb of Razia Sultana, the only female ruler of Indian Islam, and the mausoleum of a mysterious 12th-century Sufi saint.
  • Dinner in Paharganj, the historic backpacker ghetto and open-air bazaar.

Day 12(if you opted for the extra day in Delhi) Departure

Wednesday, February 12th

  • Breakfast together. Then, we’ll take care of your transfer to the airport.

Notes on the itinerary

  • Even though this tour has been planned in great detail, the activities and times mentioned in the program may be subject to changes due to adverse weather conditions, natural forces, and other circumstances beyond our control. Trains, in particular, may experience delays of several hours: of course, we have no control over this either.
  • There are no scheduled activities for the evenings – as we imagine you might be tired or need some privacy – but we’ll often offer you the chance to do something with us, maybe just have a beer together or take a walk to explore India by night.
  • To participate in the trip, you must travel with a backpack, not a suitcase: this is because, given the travel style, a backpack is much more convenient and manageable than a suitcase. Of course, we won’t be carrying it around all the time!
  • Flights must be booked independently. If you wish to purchase them through an agency, you can contact our partner Sharewood, who will help you choose the best option. If you prefer to book them yourself, we recommend using Skyscanner. For this trip, the best option is to book a round trip to/from Delhi and separately purchase the domestic flight from Delhi to Varanasi to save on the final price: it is important that there are at least 3 and a half hours between the international flight from Italy to Delhi and the domestic flight from Delhi to Varanasi. The first activity of the tour is lunch in Varanasi on 01/25, and the last one is breakfast on 02/04 in Delhi (or 02/05 if you opt for the extra day in Delhi); ideally, you should arrive in Varanasi on the morning of 01/25 and depart from Delhi on the morning of 02/04 (or 02/05 if opting for the extra day in Delhi). If you can’t find flights that fit this schedule, don’t worry! If, for example, you arrive a day earlier and/or leave a day later, we can book you a hotel for the extra nights. And if you arrive after the tour starts, we can still arrange airport pick-up.
